Ayurveda (the traditional medicine of India), is a holistic system of natural medicine and healing that has been practiced in India for over 5 000 years. The World Health Organization acknowledges Ayurveda as the world’s oldest, scientific and holistic health system.

Ayurveda is a Sanskrit word which is derived from ayur (life) and veda (knowledge), and is also known as the “Science of life.” Ayurveda’s primary goal is the promotion of good health and not the fighting of disease. To quote Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, the founder of The Art of Living – “Health is not mere absence of disease. It is the dynamic expression of life.”

The basis of Ayurveda is that the human body and the larger universe are one and that the same principles govern both. Changes occurring in the universe with the passage of time are mirrored in the human body. Therefore substances of a natural origin are beneficial to the human body and can serve to maintain the balance of its constituents. Both the universe and the human body are made up of five basic elements. These elements are:- space, air, fire, water, and earth. When the elements are in balance, the body is healthy. When there is an imbalance we find disease. The elements in combination form Three Doshas (or Mind-Body Complexes/Types) – Vata (space and air), Pitta (fire and water) and Kapha (water and earth).

Ayurveda doshas - body types

Different proportions of these Doshas make each individual unique – physically, mentally and emotionally.

With the use of natural herbs, dietary changes, massage therapies, lifestyle modifications and specific detoxification treatments, Ayurveda focuses on holistic wellness – the balance of the mind, body and spirit so that all flow in rhythm and harmony with nature.

Naadi Pariksha (Pulse Diagnosis)

Naadi Pariksha is the ancient Ayurvedic technique of diagnosis through the pulse. It can accurately diagnose physical, mental and emotional imbalances and disease in the body. Nadi Pariksha is a non-invasive practice which enables the practitioner to discern the root cause of health issues and not merely address the symptoms. Additionally, it is a finely crafted tool that grants entry to a personalized wellness regime at The Happiness Center for each individual client, ranging from therapeutic massage to personalized diets, exercise programs, detoxification and lifestyle transforming practices.

In the rest of medical science, a disease is only diagnosed in it’s fourth or fifth stage. With pulse diagnosis, it can be recognized at a much earlier stage. The sooner the signs of an illness are diagnosed, the easier it is to work preventatively and the sooner healing can begin.

The emergence of illness according to Ayurvedic principles

The order of these levels never changes

A blockage causes an imbalance in the dosha

The flow of the dosha is hindered and accumulation occurs

The dosha overflows and looks for a weak point in the body

At this weak point an illness manifests

The disease causes symptoms

The disease causes complications

Ayurveda and alternative therapies are vital to maintaining good health and preventing disease. At The Happiness Center, we begin with a professional consultation with an Ayurvedic practitioner to help understand the dosha or body constitution (Prakruti) and the body imbalance (Vikruti). With expertise in Nadi Pariksha (pulse diagnosis), our practitioners can discover any possible ailments that the patient might have. Based on this consultation, a personalised wellness regime will be recommended. This could be a combination of therapies such as massage, lifestyle changes, specific, personalized diets and detoxification treatments to enhance the body’s ability to heal naturally. We understand that your lifestyle differs vastly from the next person’s. This is why each treatment is focussed around you and your unique health and lifestyle goals.

Panchakarma panch (5) and karma (action), when translated literally means ‘Five Procedures’. It is an Ayurvedic treatment that involves elaborate methods of purification to release stress, which prepares the body tissues to absorb the maximum benefit of good nutrition and exercise.

These methods are called Snehana and Swedana.

Ayurvedic Treatment

Snehana is a body massage with warm herbal oil that helps the body to rid itself of toxins. It softens and smoothes the tissues, alleviates stress and calms the nervous system.

Swedana - Steaming

Swedana is a steam treatment which induces sweating. It comes from the Sanskrit “swid”, meaning “to sweat or to perspire”. Steaming raises the body temperature and toxins are released through the skin during the process of sweating.

The 5 main basic types of cleansing of Panchakarma or Ayurveda Therapies are:

Virechana is medicated purgation therapy: it is the cleansing of the Pitta and the purification of the blood toxins. It completely cleanses the gastro-intestinal tract and is a safe procedure without side effects.

Vamana is therapeutic vomiting, which is a medicated emesis therapy. This treatment is given to people with a high imbalance of Kapha. The treatment loosens and mobilizes the toxins, thus making it easier to eliminate them from the body.

Basti is the procedure by which the medicines are administered to the lower gastro-intestinal tract with an instrument “vasthiyanthra”, according to Ayurveda principles.

Raktamokshana is an effective blood purification therapy, in which carefully controlled removal of small quantities of blood is conducted to neutralise accumulated Pitta toxins of many blood-borne diseases.

The nose is the gateway to the brain and also to the consciousness. Applying medicine through the nostrils is called Nasya. Bodily fluids that have accumulated in the sinus, throat, nose or head are thus being removed through the nose.

Women's Wellness

Ayurveda defines health as the balance of the 3 doshas, namely Vata (air and space), Pitta (water and fire), Kapha (water and earth). Disease is viewed as a state of disharmony or imbalance of these 3 doshas. Imbalance can occur either due to the transitions in age and ageing or variances in food or lifestyle. Seasonal changes also influence our health. In today’s modern era women face a barrage of health concerns. Worldwide the changes in lifestyle and the increasing levels of stress are affecting their health. Some of the problems arising are menstrual irregularities, pre and post natal issues (particularly depression) and difficulty in managing menopause. Common solutions and cures for these concerns are encompassed within the sphere of Ayurveda. Not only does the Ayurvedic system address these concerns, it can prevent their onset. Ayurveda has the best natural health supplements and products to manage the changes in the female body from puberty to menopause. Relaxation Therapies

The role of stress in the study of several diseases is well recognized in Ayurvedic science and modern medicine. In Ayurveda, stress is known as Sahasa. Sahasa causes Ojahksaya (loss of immunity), which increases the susceptibility of the body to various diseases. Avoidance of stress is the most pragmatic strategy. Where this is not possible, the body should be well protected by taking appropriate care of the diet, proper sleep, exercise, yoga and meditation. Pulse diagnosis (Nadi Pariksha) as a part of Ayurveda and Panchakarma treatments are greatly beneficial. In today's fast paced life, stress is inevitable. Stressors recognized in Ayurveda can be classified as those causing physical stress, like unhealthy food, irregular, improper routine and mental modulations such as fear, anger, grief, greed, attachment, confusion etc. Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar says, “A strong mind can support a weak body, but a weak mind cannot support a strong body.” Just as every thought provokes an action, every emotion that flows through the mind, with or without knowledge, produces an effect on the body. The mind and body form a harmonious connection when both are in sync. However, when this connection is hampered, the mind loses its natural state of equanimity to stress and anxiety. Over time this can translate into a chronic illness. Ayurveda offers a multi-pronged approach to address the effects of stress on both body and mind. It advises effective therapies in consultation to remove imbalances from the body and is aimed at relieving the stress from the nervous system, while improving the relaxation of the entire body.
